Mila, a . . . young girl . . .
endowed with curiosity
Mila, a young girl endowed with curiosity and a sense of adventure finds a caterpillar in her Grandma’s garden. “If this chubby creature can learn to fly, why can’t I?” she wonders. Caterpillar agrees to share his knowledge: “I spin a chrysalis of silk and dream of becoming a Monarch butterfly. I dream of beautiful wings, flowers with sweet nectar and of flying over distant lands. Then I dissolve into a sort of smoothie. And one day, when I believe in my dream with EVERYTHING inside of me – POP! The chrysalis splits open and I’m a butterfly.” He gifts Mila a piece of his silk. Back at the house, Grandma confirms the caterpillar’s wisdom. “If you want to achieve extraordinary things, DREAM… IMAGINE… BELIEVE!” Using all her courage to spin a cocoon from the gifted silk, Mila metamorphoses into a butterfly. But what a butterfly! She sports wing patterns never seen before, and red boots to boot!
Mila-Butterfly faces many challenges as she ventures into the garden, including a Grumpy Bumblebee and a Hungry Skunk. But she also finds beauty and kindness. She learns it takes more than beautiful wings to be a butterfly. Later that year, Mila flies with her parents on a big airplane to Mexico to meet her other Grandma, Abuela Isabel. She wonders how Monarchs make this journey on their fragile wings. And she discovers that there are many different ways to fly.
DREAM… IMAGINE… BELIEVE!”
A Butterfly Quiz follows the story.
